Military History Unit
The Military History Unit is part of the CCMH's historical research command and is comprised of historians, writers, journalists, researchers, library and archival specialists, and photojournalists tasked with the research and study of California's early military history. This history begins with the "army and navy of the State of California" as defined by the State Constitution and the Military and Veterans Code; California's militia heritage and its linage and history; including but not limited to the Army and Air National Guard; Naval Battalion of the National Guard; California Naval Militia and its role and transition into today's Naval Reserve; the military in California and California's contributions to the armed services of the United States; as well as the early aviation history associated with both the California Army and Air National Guard. The command also provides augment support to the American Heritage Library & Museum, located in Glendale, California.
California State Military Reserve
The California State Military Reserve (CA SMR) is an invaluable part of the State of California's State Defense Force, authorized by United States Code (32 UCS 109). The CA SMR is organized under the State's Military Department under the California Military and Veterans Code (CM&VC 550) and recognized in National Guard Regulation (NGR10-4). Reporting to The Adjutant General (TAG), the CA SMR is this State's non-federalized uniformed reserve force under the Governor in support of the California Army and Air National Guard.

The California State Military Museum, located just blocks from the State Capitol, in the Old Sacramento State Historical Park, is operated for the California State Military Department by the California Military Museum Foundation, a IRS Code 501c(3) non-profit educational organization, and is supported by the California Center for Military History. The museum is a part of the U.S. Army Museum System and is the official military museum and historical research center for the State of California.

Soldiers of the CA SMR are sworn members of the California Military Department and proudly wear the uniform of the State of California. In addition to their role in homeland defense, CA SMR personnel provide valuable support to the various brigade, division and unit organizations of the California Army National Guard (CANG) and California Air National Guard (CA ANG). CA SMR soldiers are a non-paid all volunteer state force who also share many of the same state missions as their National Guard counterparts, including personnel and logistics support, legal, medical, and chaplain services, public affairs, military history, and communications support. In the event of a state emergency such as a fire, flood, earthquake, or civil disturbance, and subject to call to state active duty by the Governor of the State of California, these soldiers are then paid at the same rank and grade as their California National Guard counterparts.
